Crop Factor

Crop factor is a coefficient, which converts the focal length of the lens to obtain the actual viewing angle. It is the ratio of the diagonal of the reference format to the diagonal of the sensor in the camera.

The angle of view depends on the size of the camera sensor and focal length of the lens.

  • The larger the sensor, the larger viewing angle is displayed using the same lens.
  • The shorter the focal length, the larger the viewing angle ("see more" of the image).

The standard size of the sensor is considered to be 24 x 36 mm, which corresponds to the size indicated on the box the camera is supplied in. Therefore, the actual angle of view to another camera sensor converts dimension relative to this standard. This leads to a leveling influence on the size of the sensor viewing angle.

General principles

  • Several large sensor cameras have different viewing angles.
  • A corrected focal point in practice means the converted angle of view.
  • The real focus of the lens is given by the manufacturer and does not change.
  • The smaller the size of the sensor, the greater the depth of field.
  • Cameras with small sensors cannot capture wide viewing angles.
